1930-40: The fashion crash
October 1929, panic strikes America's heart as the price in stocks all but disappear. Millions are ruined and left bankrupt causing a divide in classes in both America and Britain.
The wealthy were largely unaffected by the financial crash and could still enjoy most if not all of the luxuries they had prior to the calamity. On the other side if the spectrum many regular working class families were now poor, crammed into 1 or 2 rooms and left with no running water, plumbing, nothing.
Despite the squalor circumstances people tried harder than ever to dress respectably. The aura of the 30's was completely different to that of the 20's. Whilst the 20's focused on youthful looks and wild, daring fashion, the emphasis of the 30's was on dressing and behaving respectably and sensibly.
Hats were back with a bang with no man nor woman going anywhere without a trusty cap or delicate headpiece. This completed the well dressed look many strived for in the 30's.
The crash also had an effect on menswear. With short sleeves being reserved for the privacy of one's own home men struggled to find the money to support having many different suits at once. So they would often only have a couple of suits but always keep one as their "Sunday Best".
