In the year 1969, Woodstock, a popular music festival took place and set ablaze a new fashion craze. Over half a million music fans attended and witnessed a message of peace and unity, inspiring the new generation.
In this decade, a mail order store called Biba opened and by the seventies their styles became a national phenomenon. The store was run primarily by Barbara Hulanicki and her husband Stephen Fritz-Simmon. In 1964 the first Biba store opened in Abingdon Road, London. Young women flocked to the store to purchase the inexpensive clothing.
Mini-length garments became a huge hit and people were grabbing them off the hatstands before they were even fully on display. At the start of the seventies, Biba was able to expand and moved to an art deco building and thanks to Hulanicki's refurbishments, art deco was revived.
