1960's: A delicate decade of decadence
Personal grooming came back big time, make up, classic matte red lipstick and pearl earrings could be found in every shop and in every magazine.
Style icon, leading fashionista and my personal inspiration, Audrey Hepburn graced this era with her style and grace.
After years of being in the shadows, menswear was revived and brought into the spotlight. As women re-adopted the of the Edwardian era, men followed suit dressing as well as the men did back then. Businessmen were the first to dip their toes into the fashion pool and the trend soon spread. Bowler hats, long tailed coats and double breasted jackets were soon found on every man both young and old. The return of Edwardian style also saw the revival of two-tone brogues and narrow pinstripe trousers, a personal favourite garment of mine.
The younger men of this era took on this style but added their own edgy twist, creating a stylish yet somewhat aggressive look. This style was coined "Teddy Boy" when a daily express newspaper shortened the word Edward to Teddy. A Teddy Boy once quoted "Our dress is our answer to a dull world". However the Teddy Boys were not as innocent as their name may suggest. Teenager John Beckley was murdered by a Teddy Boy gang called the Plough Boys and forever linked the style to violence and criminality. The popularity of the Teddy Boy and Edwardian style was largely thanks t the fact that many took pride in the fact that the style had been created on the street by the street.
